Spent the holiday at the summer home in Stone Harbor. Traffic down the shore was more than I had seen in years, having made a two hour trip into a four hour journey. I suppose I should take this as a good sign that the economy is slowly recovering. As are some financial indicators are starting to show, so I am very optimistic.
The shore was wonderful as always. I took my four year old son fishing off the dock, but we caught zip. He did not seem to mind, it’s the adventure he is into right now, not so much the result.
My three nieces where also down with my three kids, so there were six children all between the ages of three and eight years of age, all girls except for my son. There was much joy with water balloon fights, jumping the waves (water was freezing) and digging in the sand.
The children passed the time throwing stones into the bay from the deck. Challenging each other on distance as boats cruised by with an occasional wave from those on deck.
Sunday afternoon I had some downtime when all the children crashed for a late afternoon nap. Something I rarely see anymore, a moment for myself. So I seized the opportunity and went out of the house with my Labrador retriever (Phoebe).
Phoebe and I walked the three short blocks to the beach. A new ramp and gazebo was installed over the winter that overlooked the beach and ocean. I made note of it for it had some very inviting benches, but I wanted to make sure that my water dog got some water play time.
After Phoebe had her fill, we went back to the gazebo and sat down. No one was around other than a few couples walking the beach for an evening stroll. Phoebe just sat down and took it all in with her senses. She seemed very content.
I guess there is one disadvantage to living on the east coast of the US, you never see the sunset over the ocean. But Stone Harbor is only a few blocks wide so I do get to see the sun set over the bay. How tranquil sunset is with all its colors and movement over the water.
I looked down the beach at all the beach homes and marveled at their architecture. One of the homes converted itself entirely off the grid with wind and solar energy. Bravo to them for going green!
I soon realized that my time to myself was quickly coming to an end and I had to get home before the little ones woke up. But I appreciated that moment of calm and clarity and as the summer marches on, I plan to have more of them.
Peace and love to all,
D
