One thing I do for myself is to listen to a relaxation CD, it is amazing how my mood will change after I have relaxed then I do a little meditation.

I watch re-runs of 'Martin.' Laughter makes me feel so much better.
Listening to gospel music or any music with a positive message helps me as well. I love Fred Hammond 'All Things Are Working for Me'
Dancing to a hip hop song with a great beat and message work great for me too.

My mood changes almost instantly. I recall a funny joke or great lyric to get me through.

Many methods of feeling better in the book "Awaken The Giant Within" by Anthony Robbins that I have applied and it works. I'll mention a couple. Making yourself stand up straight, smiling, and holding a posture of confidence actually triggers your emotions to respond to how you move your body. Something as silly as skipping across the living room will get you out of a bad state or at weaken the bad state.

Then there's also they way you focus on things. One way to change your focus is to ask a series of questions. Ask yourself a series of questions that will lift your mood like,"What is great about this situation? What in my life am I happy about right now? What am I excited about right now? What am I grateful in my life right now? What am I proud about in my life right now?" When you ask those questions, expect to have them answered in your mind. If your first response is "Nothing!" Ask again until your brain finds some real answers. The answers can be big or small. Either way it'll heighten your mood.

The hardest part of feeling better is knowing that you -want- to feel better in the first place. We know that the way we react to things and the mood we're in are direct results of what we create for ourselves -- so if you do want to feel happy and content, take these examples and they'll work for you. Some people actually do want to feel depressed or angry at things, and that's just the way that they have to experience it at that moment. These exercises won't work for someone like that.

Skipping across a room and putting a smile on your face is so easy to do, yet at the same time it's just as hard if you don't want to be feeling better. Even standing alone in a room, you'll feel ashamed to put a smile on your own face (even when no one's watching)!

I have many of those days as well. Funny how we just 'forget' that we can just smile and make it all better in an instant.

Well, it's true. You got to want to or make yourself feel better. It's the individual's choice.

Thanks for posting this Jason. I asked myself the questions you listed and it shifted my mood. Then I went and worked out :) I am feeling energized and positive.

Awesome, Maeve! You're welcome. :) Glad you find it useful. I got it from a Tony Robbins book though. It's a great technique!

Another thing is: Do something you like. Because sitting in your bedroom feeling bad for yourself is doing something you don't like.

as someone else said, what works for one might or might not work for another. but here's what works for me:

- forcing myself to smile, even through the tears. Usually i feel silly. and then i have to laugh at what a dork i am. then i'm just laughing and everything feels a bit easier.
- alphabet thankfulness walk... i go for a walk and try to think of things i am thankful for through the alphabet (i am thankful for apples, i am thankful for biscuits, i am thankful for caring friends, i am thankful for dogs...)
- doing something secretly kind for someone else - getting my focus off myself and onto spreading love
- singing "Peace Like a River" - i am particularly focusing on centering myself with thoughts of peace, joy and love, and that little song helps me really meditate on those ideas.
- i also have places i go or things i do that i might not normally take the time to do, like walk through a used book store, go to the library, go to a bakery and buy a little pastry or treat (as cheap as i can, though.) these are like little luxuries to me and more in line with my budget than a massage, mani-pedi, retail therapy, etc.
